TODAY IS THE DAY...The day whereby I was motivated to get off my "butt" and get PEEPIN' THE SCENE out!...Yes, I am late with this edition, I had a Merry Christmas, A Happy New Year (and my birthday was on the 1st). I have now lived long enough to be able to do and say what I want...and I am going to do it!!!!

Sometimes it takes certain issues for me to really lose some sleep...Didn't sleep well at all when I read and heard what "Uncle Tom" oh! I mean Bob Johnson, the sell-out of BET!!!.. and what he said regarding Obama!

I AM FOR OBAMA....DON'T CARE WHO KNOWS IT...He cannot POSSIBLY screw up any more than that fool in office now....The sad part of all of this is THIS IS BLACK HISTORY MONTH (the same one that Morgan Freeman wanted to eliminate)...THIS IS THE MONTH where we celebrate the birth of MARTIN LUTHER KING...THIS IS THE MONTH where Obama made HISTORY in Iowa...AND...THIS IS THE MONTH that a Bob Johnson showed that even with being a Billionaire, has no dignity nor class!!!!!!!!!...After all, he fired Tavis Smiley...got rid of BET News and substituted it for BET at Nite...He then SOLD BET to a white corporation who in turn has programming that will ALWAYS make us be thought of as the N-word!!!!!!S.

Who does not have skeletons in their closets...I am sure BJ (don't even want to write this fools name) has a PLENTY!!!! Look at it this way...OBAMA was HONEST...he did not say "I did not inhale", and I liked Clinton...Such irony..Clinton wanted to be BLACK and BJ IS TRYING TO BE WHITE...VOTE FOR OBAMA...Not because he is Black...But he is the best MAN for the job...He is enthusiastic, knowledgeable, articulate and CUTE...I am too through!!!! Like the old folks say..."There is one in every wood pile. Did I say I was "through" or not...better be or this issue might not get out until February!

Birthing Pains - Allen Johnston - Part 2

Pay back has finally arrived and the system created by the major record labels for music sales is feeling the FULL BLUNT.

In a capsulated version, RADIOHEADS gambit of offering its new release online --and letting the consumer decide on price has turned out to be a genius marketing move.

TELEGRAPH UK reports that hits to RADIOHEAD's website increased 11-fold after the announcement. Although the band refuses to provide concrete numbers on how many fans have pre-ordered their seventh album, "In Rainbows," but figures from Net monitoring agency HitWise show the move pushed the site up from #43 to #1 for music websites in the UK. A band spokesman did confide that consumers so far are spurning the opportunity to download the album for as little as 45 pence ($1US Dollar) in favor of paying full pop for the £40 ($82 US Dollars) box set, which includes vinyl records, CD and artwork

Now that the public has spoken about the music that they desire, the band has direct access to the fans that love their music and they are making more money per disc than they have ever made in RADIOHEADS career. This new concept is ultimately where the Internet will take every type of recorded entertainment. Direct to the consumer. Major labels are not extremely happy about the idea that you can have a massive hit record and not have to use their retail / radio system to get it heard and sold.

The benefits of direct access to the consumer are so great that other acts are now looking at how they can utilize this system. Since Rock & Roll makes up the largest portion of Internet music sales, this is normally what we hear about Internet sales, but the originator of this direct to consumer system has to be PRINCE.

After leaving his "slave" contract PRINCE started selling his music independently through Al Bell (remember The Most Beautiful Girl In The World), but from then on he sold music exclusively online. In his latest move PRINCE gave away 2.8 million copies of his album to newspaper readers in the UK. Prince's free CD was noteworthy not only in that it marked the first time a music icon of his stature gave away a new album of original music, but also because it demonstrates the degree to which album sales no longer matter as much to artists. After all, tours are where most acts make most of their money, and the fact that the music sales have been in a tailspin for the better part of this decade is not news to anyone at this point.

There are a number of factors behind the sales slide, but one important factor is that the album is no longer the primary means for an artist or group to get their music into the hands of the public. Most bands have pages on MySpace where would-be fans can sample their wares. Others, like the Barenaked Ladies, Tilt, and Keane have released albums on USB flash drives.

Now comes word that NINE INCH NAILS mastermind TRENT REZNOR is cutting ties with his label, UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP, according to CNS. Previously, REZNOR urged fans to download his new CD illegally, after finding out how much the label was charging AUSTRALIAN and NEW ZEALAND fans for his record.

REZNOR's statement on the band's website stated, "It gives me great pleasure to be able to finally have a direct relationship with the audience as I see fit and appropriate. Look for some announcements in the near future regarding 2008. Exciting times, indeed."

Just because you release your music online does not mean that you are going to have phenomenal sales. There are a few things ALL of these artists have in common that create multiple revenue streams.

The first thing is that they have already enjoyed Gold and Platinum sales on past major label product.

Each and every one of them has cemented a loyal audience and maintains communication with that audience on a regular basis via the Internet .

Touring is a major portion of their success while having multiple merchandising articles available for sale before, during and after the tour.

Look for many "superstar" status artists not resigning with major labels in the near future, especially when they can have the type of success that RADIOHEADS & PRINCE have shown.

Last but not least, if the major labels have less superstar product to generate revenue, they'll undoubtedly have less money and time to break new talent. This will make it near impossible for new artists to acquire that major label deal without having shown labels a solid fan base that is constantly growing, massive amounts of Internet play and retailers that want the product!

The new record industry is here NOW and this is just another one of the many BIRTHING PAINS

Inquiring Minds Want to Know...

Our debut column called - INQUIRING MINDS WANTS TO KNOW was received with some concerns as to WHY Peepin' would print said article about Indies'...My response was...I did not say it...it came from someone else...NOT TELLING WHO...and don't worry about Peepin'...Worry about what is being said out there in musicland....If it got to me, a little peon, it must mean YOUR "stuff" is raggedy.

I am by no means - Anti-White, most of the time anyway, however I am..PRO-BLACK., some of the time...Sounds confusing??? It's the world we live in...Inquiring Minds Wants to Know: HOW COME SO MANY NON-AFRICAN AMERICANS CAN FLOURISH IN THE BLACK RECORD INDUSTRY...WHILE SO MANY AFRICAN AMERICAN VETS ARE STRUGGLING????

The Industry has been good to: David Sherbo...Eddie Gurren...Rick Nuhn...Ruben Rodriguez...Jim Kenny/Cumulus...Jay Stevens/Radio One...J.D. Kune/Radio and a few others...you got the drift!!!

It Was A Family Affair for Yvette

Hats off to my "bud" Denise Nixon for pulling off one of the biggest and most unique surprise parties for her sister Yvette Nixon Thompson. People came from near and far to rally the celebration of the Birthday girl!

IT WAS A BUS LOAD, literally ...I was told that all party members gathered at a location whereby a real BUS was awaiting to take them on a trip to Las Vegas unbeknown, to Yvette...she secretly arrived at the site where family and friends yelled those magic words...HAPPY BIRTHDAY.

I would have loved to have been there for the beginning but I surely was there at the end for what I was told...a ride to DIE FOR!!! The Party began with music, fun activities, and some collations on the side (come on....what is a bus ride without some fried chicken). Then I met them at the hotel and it was on!!! Eating, gambling (that's what some do...not me...I am blessed not lucky). Just imagine 35 people trying to get their party on in Las Vegas after starting it four hours before in Los Angeles.

The reason I wanted to do this article is because it "warmed the cockles of my heart" to see such a gathering. My daughter Denise, I was told, slept all the way...That had to be a mistake! She does not sleep when a "gala" is goin' on!

I met several young ladies from The Velvet Slipper Literary Book Club (Yvette is smart too!)...Sabrina, Marlane, Natalie, Pat, Jacquese, Wanda and one non-slipper Rennae. Lets not forget Glen and Raymond who tried to control all these ladies as they tried to "clean out" the outlet stores!! But to see Vettes family from St. Louis...Sharon Robinson/sister, Jeff "the baby sitter"/brother (that's a family secret) and Hope Baker only confirmed the fact that Yvette is really loved. Husband/ Andre...son/ Gabe...nephew/ Brandon...and niece/Tara brought together what I believe is a true family reunion and what better time to write about this than Black History month! Also attending the "function at the junction" was Deputy Field Rep. Albert Lord./Councilman Herb Wesson's office with sister Yvette and brother Korla Lord...Now for those of you who are willing to accept the past, you must remember the Jack Benny show...well Rochester's daughter...Tiny added some nostalgia to me remembering that the first time I came to Los Angeles, as a child....and growing up in Harlem, Rochester's house was one that I would go "trick or treating"...Man, I am so blessed to be able to reflect on things like this!!! Go get real cute now...I believe it was around Cimmeron and 37th Place...huh..huh...huh!

And when I turn 50 (again)...hint...hint...I want it done up just like that...The best part is that after all them folks, I truly was glad to know I was real close to home! I am sure the ride back was REAL QUIET!!!

Gladys Ward Synder Nygaard - Another piece of Black History

A native New Yorker, Glady Ward was born in Harlem to William and Dorothy Ward. Known as "Candy", she was a fee spit, full of life, joy and love, as sweet as her name. Her natural beauty was highlighted by her soulful hazel eyes, which appeared sometimes green, and sometimes gray. Her smile had the innocence of a child. She exuded glamour, grace and charm

Candy's show biz career began as a dancer working with Sammy Davis Jr. His sister, Ramona James, saw potential in Candy and encouraged her to continue the pursuit of her dreams. Candy became an adopted member of the Davis family. Subsequently, she joined a review in Spain 1960. From there she went to Paris and Italy, which she took by storm.

In 1965, she returned to the States and soon landed a role in a Tony Curtis film which took her to Hawaii. This prompted her interest in acting which led to her studies of the craft at Hollywood High under Mrs. Love. Following her studies arose opportunities for her to work in several films including Uptown Saturday Night and her friend Sidney Poitier and Bill Cosby, Blacula with William Marshall and television roles on Sanford and Son with Redd Foxx. Her beauty landed he in the centerfold of Jet Magazine.. This led to her interest in photography which she also studied. As the results of this she wounded up being an assistant photographer for Jet magazine. Her humanitarian activities included her loyal support as a member of The Rose Breast Cancer Society.

Gotta go...this puppy is barking...wants me to tell you ALL...HAVE A BLESSED AND PROSPEROUS 2008. The puppy also wants me to tell y'all...HAPPY VALENTINES DAY...I bet I am on time for that one!!!
